Antique 36" Lightning Hay Knife

Lighting

60.00 $
Description
Antique Lighting hay knife. Was called Lighting because of its jagged triangular teeth. The design was first patented by George Weymouth in 1871 and became widely popular through the late 19th century. Before mechanized baling became standard, hay was stored in large, loose stacks or lofts. This tool was used to saw through the densely packed, settled hay to remove manageable sections for feeding livestock. The two wooden handles are offset on one side of the metal shaft to allow the user to push and pull the blade vertically without their hands hitting the face of the haystack. Specifications: 36 inches long from top handle to tip of saw. Widest part of blade 3 inches. Wood handles 4 inches long by 1 1/8 inches in diameter. Saw weighs 3 pounds 10 ounces. Pre-owned, good antique condition. Only damage is age and weather wear to the wooden handles, one looks like it was partially burned, see pictures. Stored in smoke and pet hair free building. Fast shipping and prompt communication. Offers always welcome.
