Description
Enjoy this framed print of The Gleaners by Jean-François Millet, a renowned oil painting from 1857. This masterpiece of Realism depicts three peasant women gleaning, or collecting, leftover grains in a harvested field. Millet's work is celebrated for its empathetic portrayal of the rural poor and the dignity of their labor, challenging the idealized depictions of rural life common at the time. The painting sparked controversy upon its exhibition at the Salon in 1857 due to its unflinching depiction of poverty and its perceived socialist undertones. It is considered a significant work in art history, offering social commentary on the inequalities of 19th-century France and inspiring later genre paintings. 3x5 print in 8x10 plastic frame.
