Hakama (Riding Style) - Kōda Yasuo - Seikō Sendai Hira - Living National Treasure - Riding Hakama
Yoshio Koda, Seigo Sendaihira, Living National Treasure
Seigo Sendaihira, the ultimate hakama for men, crafted with techniques passed down exclusively within the Koda family.
The defining characteristics of Sendaihira are its woven texture, woven feel, woven aroma, and elegance.
Through a unique technique that maximizes the properties of raw silk, it boasts a lustrous sheen. When seated, it maintains an elegant drape, and when standing, it falls crisply, forming a neat, screen-like shape. It produces a refreshing rustling sound with vigorous movement, and gracefully follows your every step. This is Sendaihira, the pinnacle of hakama fabric.
Approx. 84cm below the waist tie
*The ideal length may vary slightly depending on individual height, as the preferred position of the waist tie differs.

Born in 1929 in Sendai City, Miyagi Prefecture. On the banks of the Hirose River in Sendai, he continues to weave Seigo Sendaihira using techniques passed down through generations exclusively within the Koda family. He studied under his father, Eisuke Koda, a Living National Treasure (holder of Important Intangible Cultural Property), and diligently honed his skills under strict guidance. In 2002 (Heisei 14), he was recognized as a holder of the Important Intangible Cultural Property technique for Seigo Sendaihira, following in his father's footsteps as the second generation. Upon his father's passing, he inherited the family business, Gōshi Kaisha Honba Sendaihira Kōjō (now Gōshi Kaisha Sendaihira). Sendaihira has been renowned as the quintessential hakama fabric since the Edo period. The sharp and dignified appearance of a man in traditional Japanese attire is defined by his hakama. It creates a sharp silhouette when standing and a full, well-formed shape when seated. Seigo Sendaihira is a masterpiece chosen as shobu-gi (victory attire) by the prominent men who shaped eras, including prime ministers and legendary sumo wrestlers.
Yoshio Koda passed away on October 11, 2025.
