The Seaboard System Railroad operated from 1982 to 1986 in the central and southeastern United States. It was formed by the merger of several railroads, including the Seaboard Coast Line Railroad, and was later absorbed into CSX Transportation. The term air line in the railroad's earlier name, Seaboard Air Line Railway, indicated a direct, straight route between served points, contrasting with older railroads built around natural obstacles. The Seaboard Air Line Railway was a prominent passenger and freight railway in the South during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It merged with the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad in 1967 to form the Seaboard Coast Line Railroad, which later became part of the Seaboard System and eventually CSX.
