Who is Ri Sam-pyeong: He is a Korean potter brought to the Saga domain (Nabeshima domain) during Toyotomi Hideyoshi's invasion of Korea. He is credited as the first person to successfully produce porcelain (white porcelain) in Japan, laying the foundation for Arita ware. He was naturalized and given the Japanese name Kanagae Sanbee.
Succession of the Kanagae Family: The name Kanagae Sanbee has been passed down from generation to generation, and the 13th generation took on the significant role of reviving the lost kiln as the legitimate successor of Ri Sam-pyeong's lineage.
13th Generation Kanagae Yoshito: Born in 1920, passed away in 2017 at the age of 96. As a direct descendant of Ri Sam-pyeong, he inherited his will and continued to protect the pottery industry in Arita.
Revival of Pottery Ancestor Ri Sam-pyeong Kiln: He revived the kiln, which had been dormant since the fourth generation, in 1976, passing down its tradition to the present day.
In essence, 13th Generation Kanagae refers to the head of the Arita ware kiln (Ri Sam-pyeong Kiln) who is a descendant of the pottery ancestor Ri Sam-pyeong. Mr. Kanagae Yoshito inherited this name and is a distinguished figure who connected the history and techniques of Arita ware to the present.
