Shinto
Japan's indigenous ethnic belief system.
Its characteristics can be seen in existing court rituals and folk beliefs.
It has existed for a very long time, with nature worship and ancestor worship with personified deities at its core.
The term Shinto was first used in contrast to Buddhism in the pre-accession record of Emperor Yōmei in the Nihon Shoki.
The belief in Shinto as Kanna-gara (following the gods) is seen in a note in the pre-accession record of Emperor Kōtoku, which states, Kanna-gara means to follow Shinto.
From ancient times, it has been influenced by Onmyōdō, Confucianism, Buddhism, and other beliefs, undergoing historical changes and giving rise to various Shinto theories.
From the late Nara to early Heian periods, the theory of Honji Suijaku (original ground, trace manifestation) emerged from syncretism with ideas from Tendai and Shingon Buddhism, leading to the establishment of Ryōbu Shintō.
In the Kamakura period, Ise Shintō emerged.
In the Muromachi period, Yoshida Shintō was born.
In the Edo period, there was early Juka Shintō and Suika Shintō, strongly influenced by Confucianism. From the mid-period onwards, Shinto theories emphasizing theoretical aspects, such as Fukko Shintō (restoration Shinto), emerged under the influence of Kokugaku (national learning).
In the Meiji era, Jinja Shintō (Shrine Shinto) was established as State Shinto, but Kyōha Shintō (Sect Shinto), which had its origins since the late Edo period, was also officially recognized.
After World War II, Shinto separated from state protection and continues to exist based on folk beliefs.
