【Extra Large Mandibles】 Giant Lacewing (Acanthaclisis) Peru Origin Strange Insect Tarantula Centipede Specimen
Scientific Name: Corydalus cornutus
Common Name: Eastern Dobsonfly
The Eastern Dobsonfly (Corydalus cornutus) is a large insect belonging to the family Corydalidae. Its larvae are called hellgrammites and are top predators among invertebrates in the rivers where they live, and are also used as bait by anglers.
Distribution
The Eastern Dobsonfly inhabits much of eastern North America. They are typically found near fast-flowing, unpolluted rivers, where the larvae grow.
Common Names
The origin of the term dobsonfly is unknown. John Henry Comstock used the term in his 1897 book Insect Life to refer to this species but did not explain its origin. He also mentions that anglers refer to the aquatic larvae used as bait as hellgrammites, but the origin of this term is also unknown. These common names are still widely used for this species and other fish in the family Corydalidae, but basically, what is known is that the oldest recorded use appears to originate from the Appalachian region of the southern United States (Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia). In this region, there were archaic local names and variations such as helgamite, hojack, godevil, and grandpaws (or grampus), but the clear origin and etymology of any of these are unknown. The latter name, grandpaws, was used in the same region for hellbenders, large aquatic salamanders that inhabit the same environment.
