Scientific Name: Sympetrum danae
Common Name: Black Darter or Black Meadowhawk
The Black Darter (Sympetrum danae) is a species of dragonfly widely distributed in the Arctic regions, including Northern Europe, Northern Asia, and Northern North America. It is most active in late summer and is commonly found in heathlands and marshy areas of wetlands.
Dragonflies of the Sympetrum genus are called darters in Europe and meadowhawks in North America.
Males are generally most active in the morning, spending most of their time searching for females to mate with. Their activity decreases in the afternoon. Females exhibit the opposite behavior, being less active in the early morning and tending to be more active at night. Males tend to be more active near ponds and water bodies. Conversely, females are less active near water and prefer areas with dense vegetation. Females typically only go to the water's edge when searching for a mate or laying eggs. Unlike females, males have two types of flight patterns: searching flights and patrolling flights.
