Description
Scientific Name: Magicicada tredecassini

In the spring and summer of 2024, two broods of 13-year and 17-year periodical cicadas (Broods XIII and XIX) emerged simultaneously in large numbers across the Midwestern and Southeastern United States. This rare event, where these two broods emerged together for the first time in 221 years, garnered significant attention due to the estimated total emergence of one trillion cicadas.

Magicicada cassini (originally spelled cassinii [a] in the text) is a species of periodical cicada known as the 17-year cicada, Cassini cicada, or dwarf periodical cicada. It is native to North America. While it has a 17-year life cycle, it is otherwise indistinguishable from Magicicada tredecassini, a 13-year periodical cicada. These two species are often discussed together as Cassini periodical cicadas or Cassini-type periodical cicadas. Unlike other periodical cicadas, males of the Cassini-type periodical cicadas synchronize their mating calls, leading to tens of thousands of males singing and flying in unison. This species was first reported to the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia by Margaretta Morris in 1846. In 1852, it was formally described by J.C. Fisher, who gave it the specific epithet cassini in honor of the American ornithologist John Cassin. Cassin's own report was included in Fisher's publication.
