Zashiki Warashi Village [Tono-go Hachiman Shrine] Bi-fold Yokai Goshuin
[Details]
Tono-go Hachiman Shrine is a historic shrine founded in 1189 by Asonuma Hirona, who was granted Tono-go by Minamoto no Yoritomo, to enshrine his clan deity, Hachiman-shin. It is deeply revered by the local community as the general guardian shrine of Tono-go.
With a history of over 800 years, this shrine enshrines Emperor Ojin as its principal deity and is known for enshrining Gongensama, who appears in the 110th tale of The Tales of Tono.
It is also a unique shrine that has established a Cat Shrine to enshrine the principal deity Otorasama, attracting many visitors seeking blessings for good health, longevity, recovery from illness, traffic safety, and general well-being.
The shrine keeps many cats, and one of them, Tora, a rescued tabby cat that was once a stray, served as the fifth shrine cat and signboard cat.
