Tsushima Shrine, affectionately known as Gotennosan, was founded in the 19th year of the Keicho era (1614) by order of Date Masamune.
The enshrined deity is Takehaya Susanoo-no-Mikoto, the younger brother of Amaterasu Omikami and famous for defeating Yamata no Orochi. The shrine is believed to bring blessings for warding off evil and for matchmaking.
