Okunoin Senmaidoshi
Koyasan Okunoin's Senmaidoshi (Thousand Paper Amulets) is a drinking amulet inscribed with Kobo Daishi's sacred name (Namu Daishi Henjo Kongo), believed to bring benefits for physical health and recovery from illness.
Thin, narrow amulets are bundled together and used in special prayers to remove ailments.
How to Use and Drink Senmaidoshi
Take one amulet from the bundle and roll it into a small ball. Prepare water in a cup (or bowl) and float the rolled paper on it. Chant Namu Daishi Henjo Kongo three times. Drink the water with the amulet floating in it.
Benefits and Origin
This practice originates from an ancient legend where Kobo Daishi Kukai floated his handwritten amulets in water and administered the blessed water to cure illnesses. It is said to be effective in removing physical pain and discomfort, promoting physical health, fulfilling various wishes, and praying for safe childbirth.
