What is Edo Kiriko?
The oldest existing cut glass in Japan is the White Lapis Lazuli Bowl stored in the Shosoin Treasure House.
Edo Kiriko began in the late Edo period. It is said to have started in the Tenpo era (1830-1844) when Kyubei Kaga-ya, a glass craftsman in Edo, engraved the surface of glass using sand.
In 1853, when Commodore Perry visited Uraga, he was presented with Edo Kiriko.
The Commodore was surprised by the existence of such a technique in Japan and praised it highly.
Afterward, Western techniques were incorporated along with the opening of the country.
With the efforts of the previous generation, Shigeyoshi Kumakura, the name Edo Kiriko was established. In 1985, it was designated as a Tokyo Traditional Craft Industry, and in 2002, it was designated as a Japan Traditional Craft.
