Nabeshima ware is a high-quality porcelain produced during the Edo period by the Saga domain (Nabeshima domain) with great pride. It was made as a tribute to the Shogun and feudal lords, disregarding cost. To prevent the outflow of technology, its production was strictly controlled in Okawauchi Mountain (now Imari City, Saga Prefecture), known as the secret kiln village.

Okawauchi Mountain, a small village in Imari City, Saga Prefecture. During the Edo period, the Nabeshima Domain Kiln was established by thirty-one selected potters from the region. This year, Nabeshima ware, born in this land, celebrates its commemorative 350th anniversary. We will continue to protect the Nabeshima ware culture.

The biggest difference between Imari ware and Nabeshima ware lies in their purpose of creation and creators. While Imari ware was mass-produced for commoners and export, Nabeshima ware was made using the highest level of craftsmanship as a tribute to the Shogun and others.
