Awamori Rare Shinzato Brewery Noren (Shop Curtain) Antique Old Cloth
This is a brewery noren (shop curtain) from the Ryukyu Kusu (aged Awamori) that I bought over 50 years ago at a liquor store on Kokusai Dori in Naha. The store owner kindly gave me this noren from the brewery. It is made of indigo-dyed cotton. The pattern, created by chusen dyeing, has a distinct front and back. The fabric is sturdy. Both Ryukyu on the left and Kariyushi on the right are names of Awamori from this brewery, Shinzato Shuzo.
Shinzato Shuzo was founded in 1846 (Koka 3) and is said to be the oldest sake brewery in Okinawa. The year this noren was made is unknown, but it is certainly over 50 years old.
I called Shinzato Shuzo just in case, and they informed me that they currently produce nylon noren which are only distributed to retailers. They mentioned that the indigo-dyed cotton noren is likely quite old. I believe it is no longer available even in Naha.
I have cherished this noren as an antique that evokes the history of Okinawa.
