Tsugaru Lacquerware is a traditional craft that takes 3 to 6 months to complete, involving 38 to 48 repetitions of applying lacquer, sanding, and polishing. Due to the meticulous effort and time invested, it is also known as Baka-nuri (foolish lacquering). It began as an industry of the Tsugaru domain during the Kanbun era and is now known as a representative craft of Tsugaru.
