The surface of Bulkamia granules has countless microscopic pores that lead to internal voids.
This is due to our patented soft sintering method, a special manufacturing process. This porous structure dramatically increases the surface area for nitrifying bacteria to colonize, resulting in an enormous surface area of 21,476 m2 per liter of filter media (measured by mercury intrusion porosimetry).
Furthermore, many of these voids are sized appropriately for the dimensions of nitrifying bacteria, ensuring that water passing through comes into reliable contact with them.
