Description
This is a raw stone of Ryukei-ishi (biotite slate), mined from the upper reaches of the Tenryu River in Tatsuno, Nagano Prefecture, Japan. Ryukei-ishi is known for being processed into high-quality inkstones. This stone was received as a gift about 50 years ago. Its moderate size and calm, black-based appearance would suit decoration in a Japanese-style room. The rugged surface resembles the rocky face of a steep mountain. It is naturally split horizontally, making it easy to place even without a decorative tray. Due to its somewhat brittle nature, it is best to avoid placing it outdoors. Please enjoy it indoors.
Ryukei-ishi inkstones are designated as a traditional craft of Nagano Prefecture. Currently, raw stones are only mined in limited locations, making them difficult to obtain.
