The tree tomato, or Tamarillo (Solanum betaceum), is an evergreen fruit tree in the nightshade family, closely related to tomatoes.

It begins to bear fruit at two years old, and the fruits can reach a maximum diameter of about 8 cm. As for the taste, it's described as having the refreshing tartness and flavor of kiwi fruit and passion fruit, based on a tomato flavor. It can be eaten raw in salads, or widely used in stews and other dishes. In South America, it's also mixed with sugar water to make a sour drink.

In its native region around the Andes Mountains in South America, one tree is said to yield over 60 kg of fruit per year. (Source: Wikipedia Tamarillo)

Mature plants over 1 meter tall have a cold tolerance down to -2°C, and germination occurs at temperatures of 20°C or higher. They prefer partial shade and well-draining, fertile soil. We recommend a growing medium mixed with 7 parts Akadama soil and 3 parts leaf mold.

*Due to shallow root development in young plants, support with stakes is necessary. During the rapid growth period in early summer, occasional top dressing is recommended. Also, please bring the plants indoors for the winter in areas north of Honshu.＾＾
