Adzuki Beans, 33 beans (pesticide-free, 2025 harvest)

These are 33 adzuki bean seeds harvested from a family farm in the Satoyama region of Kumamoto, a place rich in nature. I received a pod from my relatives and have been cultivating and harvesting them in my home garden for over 10 years, passing down the seeds. These adzuki beans are grown without pesticides, chemical fertilizers, or herbicides.

They have a high germination rate. I grow them as a green curtain, using a net that I lower from the second floor of my house. (I harvest about 2.5 to 3 kilograms.)

I replace the soil where I sow the seeds with fresh soil, so there are no issues with continuous cropping.

I use the harvested beans to make sekihan (red bean rice) or cook them in a pressure cooker to make anko (sweet bean paste) for anpan (sweet buns).

Adzuki beans are higher in protein, potassium, and folic acid than azuki beans, and I recommend them for those who tend to be anemic.

* In my home garden in Yamaguchi Prefecture, I sow seeds in late May every year.

* After sowing, do not let the soil dry out until the seeds germinate.

* There was a year when ladybugs appeared in large numbers, but before the adzuki bean pods formed, a natural enemy, the praying mantis, arrived and eliminated them all, so there was no damage.
