Rare Eggplant Kumamoto Red Eggplant, Open-Pollinated Seeds, 20 Seeds, Natural Farming, Organic, No Fertilizer
Seeds for the rare Kumamoto Aka Nasu (Kumamoto Red Eggplant), an heirloom variety. Contains 20 seeds.
These are organic seeds cultivated using natural farming methods.
This eggplant is said to be the ancestor of the Enpitsu Nasu (Pencil Eggplant) that has become established in Niigata.
Currently, the very similar F1 hybrid Higomurasaki is widely available.
Personally, I recommend the heirloom variety Kumamoto Aka Nasu because its skin is thinner, the flesh is softer, it has less bitterness, and it's sweeter.
*This listing is for seeds only (does not include the pictured packaging, etc.).
Can be shipped via Mercari便 (additional ¥150).
These seeds were harvested from eggplants picked in the fall.
They are grown using natural farming methods, meaning they are pesticide-free and fertilizer-free, with no chemical fertilizers used at all.
Fertilizer attracts pests, so I believe natural farming without fertilizer is optimal.
As this is an heirloom variety, you can harvest seeds each year to grow delicious eggplants.
Companion planting with edamame, peanuts, parsley, etc., seems to promote excellent growth and enhance flavor.
It also pairs well with marigolds.
Here, we grow them using straw mulch instead of plastic mulch.
Although not widely available, this variety is surprisingly easy to grow.
Kumamoto Aka Nasu has a reddish-purple skin.
It has a shape very similar to the Enpitsu Nasu.
