Sowing Time (Spring Sowing):
Sow seeds from March to May, after the cold has passed and the weather has warmed up.
When sown in spring, it will flower from late spring to early summer of the same year.
Sowing Method:
As it has a taproot (roots grow straight down), it is best to sow directly (directly in the garden or planter) or grow seedlings in pots and transplant without disturbing the roots.
As it is a light-requiring seed that needs light to germinate, after sowing, cover the seeds with a thin layer of soil or barely cover them, pressing down lightly.
The optimal germination temperature is around 15-20°C.
Environment and Location:
Prefers a location with plenty of sunlight and good ventilation.
Prefers well-draining, slightly dry soil.
Care and Watering:
Water thoroughly after the soil has dried out. The key is to avoid overwatering and manage it on the drier side.
Once it grows to about 70cm tall, it is advisable to stake it or plant it with other plants to prevent it from falling over.
Overwintering and Perennialization:
It is basically a perennial, but it is somewhat weak to high temperatures and humidity, so it is sometimes treated as an annual in Japan.
By cutting it back promptly after flowering, you can help it overwinter and enjoy flowers in the fall as well.
Spring-sown plants grow quickly, so if managed in a suitable environment, they will show beautiful flower spikes.
