Description
These are seeds for an extremely spicy, thick-fleshed, large chili pepper.
It's not just spicy; it has an addictive umami flavor.
You won't be able to go back to regular chili peppers (lol).

The true variety name is unknown.
In its region of origin, it has simply been called togarashi (chili pepper) for a long time.

I obtained seeds of this local variety from a seed shop in Shinshu (Nagano Prefecture) and grew them. The heat and flavor were so incredibly intense that I've been collecting seeds from my own harvest every year since.

The largest ones grow to about 10 cm. Because they are thick-fleshed, they are most delicious eaten fresh when fully ripe.

Chop them up and add them to dishes for a juicy and stimulating spicy flavor.
It's addictive.
You can easily make dead sauce with fresh chili peppers; it's almost anticlimactic how simple it is.

While not the most prolific producers among chili peppers, chili peppers in general tend to yield a lot, so it's best to dry and preserve them.

Crush them in a mill to make ichimi (ground chili pepper).
Try sprinkling this ichimi on various foods.
Curry is especially recommended!!

In my home, we also make doubanjiang (spicy bean paste) using these chili peppers. The mapo tofu and twice-cooked pork made with it are popular even with the children.

■ Cultivation Method
Sow seeds in cell trays from around February to June.
They won't germinate easily unless the soil temperature is sufficient.
If you start seedlings outdoors, they will sprout around late March.

Once a few true leaves have emerged, transplant them into pots.
Plant them out when the first flower buds appear.
Unless you are growing in containers, there's no special need to water them. However, after rain, washing off the mud splash will help prevent diseases.
They can be grown organically without pesticides.

■ Harvest
Fresh chili peppers are rarely sold, so this is a privilege of the grower.
Any peppers you miss can be harvested all at once in late autumn and hung under the eaves or dried using a dehydrator.
The sooner they are dried, the more stable and beautiful their color will be.
In years with a lot of rain, their thick flesh can mold before drying. As a preventative measure, make slits and expose the seeds before drying.
