Maru-sode Karappa unable to move with arms folded? Specimen Crustacean Shrimp Crayfish Scorpion
Scientific Name: Calappa calappa?
The Hat-χ? crab (Calappa calappa) is a species of crab classified under the order Decapoda, infraorder Brachyura, and family Calappidae. In Japan, it inhabits coastal waters south of Sagami Bay and is widely distributed in the Western Pacific and Indian Oceans. It lives in shallow seagrass beds and coral reefs.
The carapace width is about 13 cm. The posterior lateral margins of the carapace are extremely prominent, covering the body as if a round lid has been placed over it. The carapace is smooth, with two types: one is monochrome, and the other has dark red spots. The chelipeds are broad and are usually held to cover the front of the body, which lacks a carapace, for defense. Seen from the front, it looks like it's covering its face with both hands in shame, giving it a humorous appearance.
This crab is popular enough to be made into stuffed animals.
Normally, it buries itself in the sand with only its eyes showing. It preys on shellfish by carving open their shells with its chelipeds.
