Light Blue Dog-Shaped Toothpick Holder, Ceramic, Zodiac Series
10.00 $
Description
Light blue ceramic dog-shaped toothpick holder, characterized by its crackled glaze (kannyu).
This appears to be a toothpick holder from the Chinese zodiac, fired using a technique called celadon (seiji).
Characteristics of Celadon:
This technique involves firing with a small amount of iron in the glaze, resulting in a unique pale blue-green (light blue) color.
Fine, web-like cracks are visible on the surface; this is called kannyu (crackled glaze) and is a characteristic of celadon.
Similar products are sometimes labeled as Seto ware from Aichi Prefecture or Arita ware from Saga Prefecture, so this item may have been made in one of these regions.
This is part of a series inspired by the Chinese zodiac (12 animals), and other animal variations such as dogs, sheep, and boars (i) also exist.
