● Description
Kiyomizu-yaki is one of Kyoto's representative traditional crafts. It originally referred to pottery fired by kilns in the Kiyomizu-zaka area on the way to Kiyomizu-dera Temple.
Currently, items produced in the Kiyomizu-yaki Pottery District in Higashiyama Ward and Yamashina Ward of Kyoto City, and in Kōyama, Uji City, are collectively referred to as Kiyomizu-yaki. The official name, designated as a traditional craft by the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, is Kyo-yaki / Kiyomizu-yaki.
The difference between Kyo-yaki and Kiyomizu-yaki used to be that in the past (around the Edo period), in addition to Kiyomizu-yaki, there were other kilns such as Awata-guchi ware, Yasaka ware, Otowa ware, and Mimosusogawa ware in various parts of Kyoto City, and the term Kyo-yaki was used as a general term for them.
However, over time, only Kiyomizu-yaki remained, and today, Kyo-yaki and Kiyomizu-yaki are almost synonymous.
