Description
Scientific Name: Theodosia rodrigezi

Common Names: Kabuto Hana-mogu, Rodrigues Kabuto Hana-mogu, Theodosia

This species is named after Lowell Rodrigues, a local guide who assisted an expedition during an entomological survey on Palawan Island.

Body length is 30-50mm. Adult males possess long horns similar to rhinoceros beetles, combined with the metallic sheen of jewel beetles.
While there are many scarab beetles in the subfamily Cetoniinae with horns, including those commonly known as horned jewel beetles, only this genus features horns that extend not only from the head but also from the pronotum, and are as long as those of rhinoceros beetles.
A protrusion is visible near the center of the thoracic horn, which bifurcates at the tip. The horns, back, and legs have a reddish hue, while the rest of the body exhibits a metallic green sheen. Females lack horns.
Long legs are also a characteristic feature.

Inhabits the mountainous regions of Borneo. Despite their distinctive horns, their diurnal activity, diet, and flight characteristics are not significantly different from many other scarab beetles in the subfamily Cetoniinae. They are diurnal and excellent fliers. In their mountainous habitat, they can be observed flying up mountain slopes along updrafts, along with various other insects.
They visit flowers blooming on the tips of thin branches of tall trees to feed on nectar. Their long legs are convenient for walking on the tips of thin branches.
Larvae are found in decaying wood, but much remains unknown. Breeding (currently prohibited in Japan) is difficult, and stable captive breeding has not been reported due to issues such as inactive oviposition and a high number of non-viable eggs that do not hatch.

Please note that we cannot guarantee against grade reduction due to transport.
We will ship the individual pictured from Brooks Point, Palawan Island, Philippines. My measurement was 30mm.
