Specimen Preparation Kit - Ideal for Beginners and Independent Study Projects

This is a specimen-making kit for beginners.

Photo 1 shows an example of a finished specimen (rhinoceros beetle and ruler are not included; this box is smaller than the actual specimen).

Photos 2 and 3 show the actual specimen box.

Contents:

① Specimen Box
15 cm x 15 cm x 6 cm height. Includes transparent plastic sheet. Lined with cork. Please excuse minor imperfections as this is handmade. (Refer to photos)

② Pins

Use these to secure the legs and body of the insect.

③ Insect Repellent
Protects specimens from mites and parasites. Keeps specimens fresh for longer when placed in the case with the specimen.

④ Desiccant (Silica Gel)
Protects specimens from moisture and mold. Keeps specimens fresh for longer when placed in a sealed bag with the specimen.

⑤ Sealed Bag
Used for airtight drying of specimens and for long-term storage. For airtight drying of large rhinoceros beetles or multiple specimens, please add more desiccant. Food-grade or clothing-grade desiccants are fine. Drying time is approximately 2-3 weeks.

How to Make:

① Arrange the insect's mandibles, horns, legs, and antennae with pins and fix them into the cork. If the insect is stiff, soak it in hot water to soften it.

② Leave the lid open and place in a well-ventilated area out of direct sunlight or in an air-conditioned room. Dry for about 3 weeks to 1 month.

For rapid drying, purchase additional desiccant. Place a larger desiccant and the included insect repellent inside the box, close the lid, and place the entire box in a sealed bag for about 1 week of drying.

③ When the smell disappears and the insect becomes completely stiff and dry, it is complete. Store in a place out of direct sunlight and with low humidity, with the included desiccant and insect repellent inside the box. For long-term storage, place the entire box in a sealed bag.
