【Exclusive Specimen】A type of Driver Ant? Dorylus sp. Mantis
Scientific Name: Dorylus sp.
Japanese Names: Sasurai-ari / Driver Ant / Sausage Ant
English Names: Driver ants, safari ants, or siafu
Dorylus fulvus currently has 11 subspecies and 7 junior synonyms. These taxa were described from the 1800s to the early 1900s, and although the synonyms were proposed in the early 1900s, there has been little taxonomic review since then. Of the 11 subspecies, 3 were described based on workers, 4 on workers and males, and 4 on males only. Therefore, it is almost impossible to taxonomically compare these taxa, and the original descriptions are effectively worthless. The true identity of these subspecies and their interrelationships remain uncertain until a complete revision is carried out.
