Description
Scientific Name: maybe Megascolia procer
Common Name: Giant Scoliid Wasp
This is a solitary wasp belonging to the family Scoliidae, found throughout Asia. With a wingspan of 11.6 cm, it is one of the largest wasps in the world.
The wings are brown with a blue iridescent reflection. This structural color is due to the wings being made of chitin, blackened by melanin, and covered with a transparent coating layer 286 nm thick. This coating layer functions as an interference thin film.
This species is a parasitoid of the Atlas beetle (Chalcosoma atlas) of the family Scarabaeidae. The wasp paralyzes the Atlas beetle larva with its stinger, lays an egg on it, and buries it in an underground nest. The hatched wasp larva then preys on the still-living host and pupates within its carcass.
We will ship the pictured female specimen from Mount Argopuro, Java, Indonesia.
