Giant hornet queen specimen preserved in shochu, in a glass bottle
Collected on April 16th. This is a Japanese giant hornet queen pickled in shochu.
The queen, which can only be encountered between early April and early May, is caught with a butterfly net and immediately pickled in 35% white liquor.
Her abdomen is larger than that of a worker bee, and it is believed to be filled with eggs that will produce a large number of worker bees.
It is in a 225cc bottle.
You can observe the clear white liquor gradually changing to a light brown to brown color.
A white, fluffy substance is emerging from the abdominal area.
