These are wild Japanese asters, Ryūnōgiku, which have naturally spread and grown in the garden of my home on the plateau where temperatures drop to -15℃.
They are the original species, said to be the parent strain of the wild Japanese aster (Nodojigiku) that became popular in the morning drama Ranman. Recently, this fragrant and simple wild aster has become rare in this area.
The name given by Professor Makino comes from its scent, which resembles the Chinese essential oil borneol. It has a camphor-like aroma and is effective for pain relief such as back pain, stiff shoulders, and arthritis, as well as promoting blood circulation. It has been used in medicinal baths or by applying fresh leaves.
Grown without pesticides, you can garnish dishes with a sprig, or enjoy the leaves as tempura or deep-fried as a seasonal delicacy. The leaves can also be enjoyed blanched or dressed with vinegar as a longevity food.
Fresh flowers are beautiful, of course, but after flowering, drying the entire plant and placing it in a sachet by your pillow can promote relaxation and peaceful sleep.
They prefer sunny areas in forests or along embankments, and their seeds are dispersed by wind, while they also spread through underground stems. After a few years, they form clusters and become more prominent.
The gently and thinly growing stems branch well, and large plants that are 5-6 years old grow horizontally. In my home, I place them on rocks to admire their beautiful cliff-hanging appearance.
In mid-October to November, their white flowers beautifully complement the purple of the Japanese bellflower, and I enjoy their charm in my garden every year as the season wanes.
Their flowering period is long, making them a great accent for Japanese gardens and rock gardens. Their elegant appearance, along with their fragrance, makes them recommended as tea flowers.
☆At my home, they spread wherever they please, but for detailed characteristics, cultivation methods, and differences from Nodojigiku, please refer to the internet or field guides.
