Jewel of the Stream - *Clethra barbinervis* (Japanese Clethra)

The name originates from its habit of growing where it covers the stream, but it is also said to have fruits so beautiful they make the stream disappear from view.
Its fruits are a glossy, blue lapis lazuli color, possessing an otherworldly quality far removed from typical plants, truly like jewels. Originally, it was also known as a tree for the discerning.
However, in recent years, *Clethra barbinervis*, belonging to the Clethraceae family, has gained immense popularity, especially on social media, due to its combination of the natural feel and soft leaf texture of the popular evergreen *Clethra japonica*, along with its rustic charm, making it perfect for a woodland-style garden.
Despite its appeal, the reason it remains relatively unknown is simply its rarity and limited distribution. Cultivation is relatively easy, growth is slow, and it naturally maintains its shape, requiring almost no pruning. For good fruit production, it's best planted in semi-shade with well-draining soil (akadama, kanuma soil) mixed with about 30% humus soil. The leaves also turn orange to yellow, with a translucent quality towards the end of the season, making it a tree with high ornamental value throughout the year. It can be cultivated from southern Tohoku to Kyushu.
With extremely limited distribution, specimens of this size and good form are quite rare. Don't miss this opportunity to acquire a Jewel of the Stream wild-collected *Clethra barbinervis*!
