The Rose of Sharon (Japanese name: Mukuge, Scientific name: Hibiscus syriacus) is a deciduous tree belonging to the Malvaceae family, Hibiscus genus. Its old Japanese name is Tachiaoi. It is widely planted as a garden tree and is an indispensable flower for tea ceremonies in summer. Its Chinese name is Mùjīn (朝開暮落花 - flowers that open in the morning and fall in the evening).

The flower meanings of the Rose of Sharon are delicate love, delicate beauty, new beauty, persuasion, belief, respect, and affection. The old Japanese name for the Rose of Sharon was Tachiaoi. It is said that the flower meanings of belief, respect, and affection were given when the Crusades brought it to Europe around the 12th century. There are no specific flower meanings for each color; they are all common.

Although not legally designated, it is considered the national flower of the Republic of Korea. The Rose of Sharon motif is included in the national emblem, the highest order of merit, the Grand Order of the Mugunghwa, the insignia of commissioned officers (field grade officers) in the Korean military, and the insignia of all ranks in the police force.

It is said to have been introduced to Japan from China during the Nara-Heian period. In Japan, it is not only used as a garden tree but also in tea ceremony. Because the tea master Sen Sōtan favored the Rose of Sharon, and the ephemeral nature of its flowers aligns with the spirit of ichi-go ichi-e (one time, one meeting) in tea ceremony, it has become the most representative summer tea flower today. It has also been used as a summer tea flower (chabana: flowers arranged in a tea room).
