Yabunikki (Cinnamomum japonicum) Seedling, 1-year-old, Seed-grown
◆ Variety Name: Yabunikkkei (Cinnamomum japonicum)
◆ Origin: Native species primarily from Japan (Honshu)
◆ Seed Collection Location: Northeastern Chiba Prefecture
◆ Time from Seed Sowing: Approximately 8 months (seeds have been germinated)
◆ Variety Characteristics
An evergreen tree of the Lauraceae family, it grows wild in mountainous areas and on coastlines. As it belongs to the Lauraceae family, its leaves and roots have a faint, pleasant aroma. It grows quickly and is resistant to both dry and humid conditions. Its roots grow thick and spread deeply and widely, making transplanting difficult. Therefore, careful consideration is needed when choosing a location for planting in the ground. It is relatively shade-tolerant, growing robustly even in areas with poor sunlight. The leaves are glossy and tend to grow densely. It is often used for hedges, windbreaks, and privacy screens.
◆ About This Product
This is a germinated seedling from seeds collected from a Yabunikkkei tree, estimated to be nearly 100 years old, growing at my parents' home (see photos). The seeds were sown in January, and the sprouts appeared around June. This product is for those who enjoy growing plants from a small stage and watching them grow. Yabunikkkei is a dioecious plant, and female plants bear fruit after flowering. However, as this product is grown from seed, the sex of the plant is unknown. The size is shown in the photo compared to a 500ml plastic bottle.
In the past, my grandfather used to dig up the roots of this tree and chew them after washing them. While not as strong as true cinnamon or cassia, they have a spicy and sweet flavor, the taste of what is commonly called nikki (Japanese cinnamon). However, roots are vital to a plant's life, so it will be quite some time before the roots can be harvested.
