Thick rattan is valuable due to its rarity and high durability, and unlike cheaper alternatives, it can be used for a lifetime.
Rarity: Rattan can only be harvested in tropical and subtropical regions, and thick, high-quality materials are limited. In Japan, rattan does not grow naturally, so all of it is imported, making good quality thick rattan especially rare and valuable.
Durability and Strength: Thick rattan is very sturdy and, with proper care, can last a lifetime. This high durability is the source of its value.
Aging: As a charm unique to natural materials, the deepening color and increasing luster with use, known as aging, are also appreciated.
