British Antique Wooden Wheel Back Chair / Dining Chair (91-203-13)

A vintage wooden wheel-back chair found in the English countryside.
Circa 1930s. Elm wood.

This chair features the traditional Windsor bow design, where the backrest is shaped like a bow.

Wheel-back literally means a chair with a wheel on its back.

Its most distinctive feature is the gracefully curved backrest, made from a single piece of wood bent into an arch. This bentwood construction is not only aesthetically beautiful but also remarkably strong and resilient.

While originating in Britain, it evokes more of an Early American feel for Japanese people. This is understandable, as Windsor chairs, though British in origin, developed in America alongside furniture styles like Shaker furniture and became globally popular as Colonial style.

This particular chair is a wheel-back style, and its shape is said to have been influenced by the Queen Anne style backrest popular in the 18th century.

This means that a design favored by the aristocracy was adopted into everyday life for common people. Subsequently, Windsor chairs evolved in various ways over time, continuing to be cherished worldwide to this day.

The aged patina and rustic texture, characteristic of vintage antiques, exude a nostalgic atmosphere, adding a gentle warmth and comfort to any space. Simply displaying it can add depth to your interior.

It's perfect not only as a display piece for shops but also for creating European movie or interior magazine-like scenes by combining it with antique furniture in your daily life. It could also be interesting to pair it with modern furniture.
