Daniel/Yokohama Daniel Desk with Upper Cabinet and Writing Bureau

Established over 130 years ago, Daniel (Yokohama) is a long-established furniture maker that has continued to handcraft the finest European-style furniture. Daniel Furniture has been manufactured as genuine furniture and valuable household goods, based on long tradition and sophisticated design, utilizing the craftsmanship of experienced artisans.

When the black ships arrived and many foreigners began to reside in Yokohama, in 1863, Englishman Gorman established a European-style furniture company in Motomachi, Yokohama, and Yokohama Classic Furniture began to be produced.
Eventually, the quality greatly improved through the craftsmanship unique to Japanese artisans, resulting in such exquisite work that even Westerners were impressed, with some even taking it back to their home countries.
Thereafter, artisans who had learned their skills in Yokohama expanded, mainly around Shiba in Tokyo, achieving great prosperity by undertaking work for the Imperial Household Agency and others. Daniel Furniture is a masterpiece of representative Japanese traditional furniture, inheriting that traditional technology and spirit.
Its high quality and elegant refinement create a happy and enjoyable lifestyle, making it furniture that can be passed down to the next generation without ever becoming tiresome.
Even in the era of mass production, Daniel, which produces genuine wooden furniture, relies on the indispensable handwork of artisans. The shapes, carefully finished using various planes, create warm lines and a tactile feel that machines cannot replicate.
