? Karaki Furniture
This is a traditional Chinese craft furniture made using hard wood, without nails, constructed with joinery and adhesive. In Japan, it was brought over during the Nara period by envoys to Tang China. Because rare woods were used, these woods were called kara-no-ki (wood from Tang), or karaki, which is how it came to be called Karaki furniture in Japan. Karaki refers to woods such as ebony, red sandalwood, rosewood, and ironwood (tagayasan). These are extremely hard woods with beautiful grain, and have long been used as raw materials for high-quality furniture and furnishings.

? Red Sandalwood / red sandalwood
Red sandalwood, along with ebony and ironwood, is one of the three great銘木 (famous woods) of Karaki. It is a hardwood distributed in Southeast Asia. It is widely distributed in tropical regions worldwide and is known by various names, including rosewood, in different places. (Examples include Brazilian rosewood from Brazil, Cocobolo from Central America, East Indian rosewood from Southeast Asia, and others, as well as *Dalbergia oliveri* called Techa-shitan.) Its grain is clear, and it is characterized by purplish-black stripes in places. It is dense, heavy, and hard wood, extremely difficult to cut, and is so heavy it sinks in water. It is used as a high-quality wood for Karaki furniture, Buddhist altars, building materials, musical instruments, and Japanese furniture. Due to its slow growth, furniture and decorative items made with red sandalwood are considered very expensive.
