Unlike the similar-looking succulent Portulaca, this plant is creeping and forms a dense carpet of white flowers. It shines and glitters beautifully in the sun with its silvery appearance.
Its leaves resemble pine needles, hence the Japanese name Matsubagiku (pine needle chrysanthemum), as they are rod-shaped and its flowers resemble chrysanthemums. It is a vigorous and hardy plant.
It also makes a cute and stylish houseplant for interior decor.
The flowers open in sunlight and close at night.
Uses: Potted plants, flower beds, succulents.
Can be propagated by cuttings and division.
Plant height: 5cm - 20cm
Flower diameter: 2cm - 5cm (resembles chrysanthemum flowers)
Flowering period: May - October
Location: Prefers sunny locations with well-draining soil, also cold-hardy.
Watering: As it is a succulent, it prefers to be kept slightly dry.
Fertilizer: Grows even in poor soil.
Propagation: Can be propagated by cuttings and division.
It grows well even when temperatures exceed 30°C, but may suffer from sunburn in summer, so move it to a location that gets shade in the afternoon.
The above-ground parts will wither in winter, but it is cold-hardy and can be grown outdoors as is. In cold regions, it is advisable to cover with straw for frost protection.
