This refers to long-pile carpets that have been continuously woven by the nomadic Qashqai tribe from the Zagros Mountains in western Iran to the highlands of Fars Province in the south.
Gabbé, woven to be fluffy, is originally lightweight. For nomads traveling through harsh nature such as mountains and deserts, it serves as a convenient rug for moving, bedding, and sometimes as a cover to protect animals like donkeys and chickens on cold nights.
It is also true that in recent years, due to the popularity of Gabbé in Europe and Japan, production for export as interior decor, such as rugs and wall hangings, has increased.
Gabbé woven by the Qashqai tribe was registered as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2012.
