■■ Japanese Bamboo Basket ■■

The baskets and sieves from Torigoe Bamboo Crafts are made from Suzudake (a type of bamboo grass that grows wild in the Torigoe area of Ichinohe Town, northern Iwate Prefecture). This bamboo craft has been passed down in the region for generations, developing as a side business for agriculture. While market baskets and sieves tailored to current demand are now the mainstream, it is said that in the past, luggage was primarily produced.

Before weaving, the first step is to create the bamboo strips, which are the raw material. Suzudake is processed into bamboo strips several millimeters wide. This process of creating the bamboo strips is very labor-intensive and requires skilled craftsmanship. These bamboo strips are then carefully woven by hand to create sieves and hand-held baskets.
