This is a noren (traditional Japanese curtain) made of thick linen with a whirlpool pattern. Although it's thick, the weave is loose, giving it a slight transparency. It can be used all year round.
Due to the stencil dyeing method, the dye does not penetrate to the back. Photo 5 shows the back.
The whirlpool pattern doesn't occur where waves form, so it might have meanings similar to the ensō (Zen circle) such as no waves, no sharp corners, going in circles and returning to the origin, or going in circles and engulfing the surroundings. ... Urban legend?
