[What is Yonezawa-ori?]
This material is woven in Yonezawa City, Yamagata Prefecture, one of Japan's leading jacquard production areas.
A characteristic is Kusaki-zome (plant dyeing) using natural dyes.
It is famous for its richly textured pre-dyed woven fabrics using plant dyes such as safflower, and incorporates a technique called Chijimi (crepe).
By using threads that shrink and threads that do not shrink, two fabrics are woven so that the front and back switch places at the patterned areas, creating a textured surface.
