Himeji Kurozan leather is a high-quality leather produced entirely by Sakamoto Shoten, from tanning to processing. It is a brand that embodies the concept of The Japanese Leather and is distributed globally from Japan, having received numerous awards both domestically and internationally. Using domestic Japanese black cattle, Himeji Kurozan leather is created by fusing traditional Japanese techniques of tanning and lacquer coating. It is also known as Black Diamond of Leather due to its beauty, resembling countless tiny diamonds scattered across its surface. It is highly resistant to friction and is currently used in martial arts equipment such as the chest protectors for Kendo. It is said to have been used in the armor of high-ranking generals during the Sengoku period. By handling all processes in-house, they can create a base leather that is compatible with lacquer, enabling ideal lacquering. Lacquer is applied to the grain by hand, with repeated drying and coating. Layering the lacquer multiple times creates a glossy finish and volume, deepening the richness of the black luster. This meticulously crafted Kurozan leather is rare, with even specialized craftsmen able to produce only about 20 pieces per month. Furthermore, it is produced using tanning techniques that minimize the use of chemicals, prioritizing consideration for people and nature, and has received certification as Japan Eco-Leather.
