"Showa Retro" Toyama Go-yakuhin (Medicine Box) & Thermometer

19.80 $
Description
This is a 2-piece set from the Showa retro era. The Toyama Go-yaku-in (Toyama Medicine Box) is empty. It is from the Kadokawa Takeharu Pharmacy in Mizuhashi Town, Toyama Prefecture, and was used as a medicine box in my grandmother's house in Shimabara, my family's hometown. The inner box is made of cardboard, but the outer box is made of wood covered with paper, making it surprisingly sturdy. It is said that during the early Showa period, medicine merchants from Toyama would regularly travel around Japan to replenish medicines used in households. The box measures 20cm in height, 16cm in width, and 9.5cm in depth. The thermometer is also an antique from my family home that has seen many years, measuring 17cm in height, 4.5cm in width, and 1cm in depth. As both are antiques from the early Showa period, some deterioration due to age, such as dirt and rust, is unavoidable, but there is no significant damage. They can withstand daily use, but I think they would be more enjoyable as retro decorative items.
