This is a bamboo cane craft made from natural Hotei bamboo and Kikkou bamboo, produced over approximately one year at my workshop. I am Takeshita, representing Takezue Kogeihou, a workshop specializing in Hotei bamboo and Kikkou bamboo.
Hotei bamboo and Kikkou bamboo are rare. Hotei bamboo is a type of madake bamboo that has mutated, characterized by shorter-than-average nodes.
Hotei bamboo is named after the bulging belly of the deity Hotei from the Seven Lucky Gods. Kikkou bamboo is named after its resemblance to the hexagonal pattern of a turtle's shell.
The process involves:
1. Harvesting natural Hotei bamboo and Kikkou bamboo.
2. Washing to remove dirt and natural drying for about 2 months.
3. Applying a scorching process to create焼き模様 (yaki-moyou - burnt patterns). During this process, oil will emerge from the surface of the skin, which is lightly wiped off, leaving some behind.
4. Once the scorched bamboo has cooled, it is polished with rice bran regularly for about a year to achieve a glossy finish.
During this year, the moisture evaporates, making the bamboo significantly lighter than when it was first harvested. The scorching process creates patterns and almost entirely prevents cracking. Each scorched pattern is unique and original to our workshop.
Each bamboo cane craft is a one-of-a-kind item. Please experience a truly unique bamboo cane craft.
A non-slip rubber tip for the bottom of the cane is not included. You can attach one yourself, or we can attach it for you for an additional fee of 1000 yen. Please understand this in advance.
Length: Approximately 125cm
Thickness: Diameter, Top: Approx. 3cm
Diameter, Bottom: Approx. 2.5cm
Our workshop typically sells these canes for 14,000 to 18,000 yen each, but we only sell those that have completely dried out.
Larger bamboo cane crafts are sold in the 20,000 yen range.
To preserve the natural texture, original patterns and stubborn stains are incorporated as burnt patterns. Please understand this before purchasing.
We will include rice bran for polishing as a complimentary gift.
Additionally, we will specially include one bamboo cane craft as a gift (the item in the last photo).
