In the mid-Edo period, Empress Go-Sakuramachi, who was suffering from a toothache, is said to have been instantly cured after applying sacred chopsticks (shinbashi) and sacred salt from Hakusan Shrine (Tokyo). From this, Hakusan Shrine gained a reputation for the benefit of toothache healing.
There are also many other stories related to teeth, such as the use of sacred toothpicks (an ancient toothbrush) and sacred salt from Hakusan Shrine for the first tooth-blackening ceremony in the imperial court, and the belief that using chopsticks from Hakusan Shrine prevents cavities. From the wordplay of Haku-san (toothache relief), Hakusan-sama is also the god of teeth, relieving dental pain.
