★About Mother-of-Pearl (Pinctada maxima)
A large bivalve mollusk of the family Pteriidae (some individuals reach up to 30 cm in length).
It produces South Sea pearls.
The pearls produced are large.
- Shell edges are silvery white: White, Silver
- Shell edges are golden: Yellow, Cream Gold
The iridescent nacre on the inside of the shell has been widely used as a decorative material for crafts (inlay, mother-of-pearl lacquerware, etc.) since ancient times.
Distribution: Tropical Pacific region / In Japan, south of the Ryukyu Islands (for natural specimens).
Cultivation period: It takes approximately 2-4 years for a Pinctada maxima to mature enough to produce pearls. It takes another 2-3 years for pearls to form after the nucleation surgery.
Utilization of Pinctada maxima shells:
The luster of mother-of-pearl, which is distinct from that of gemstones, has the warmth of organic material. Therefore, its smooth texture is gentle, and it feels comfortable to the touch when used.
Furthermore, as it is used more frequently, its luster increases, emitting an increasingly elegant light.

A polished Pinctada maxima shell displayed in a corner of a department store's tableware section. Approximately 25 cm in maximum diameter, with considerable thickness and beautiful iridescence. The price for such a piece is often around ￥60,000!!
The rarity that justifies such a price becomes understandable when you learn about the process of pearl cultivation from Pinctada maxima (from artificial insemination to maturation as a mother-of-pearl oyster).
