This is a pickle pot from the prestigious Tokoname ware kiln, Hisamatsu-gama, which is now out of business and difficult to obtain.
It is a long-loved item, featuring the beautiful, calm amber glaze characteristic of Hisamatsu-gama, and has been used for many years as a storage container for making miso, umeboshi (pickled plums), nukazuke (rice bran pickles), kimchi, and more.
It has the moderate breathability and heat retention unique to pottery, making it suitable for making pickles.
